SAVA School of Surveying Open Day offers food for thought for prospective surveyors

On Friday 17th April we held the third in a series of SAVA School of Surveying Open Days, with an aim to show prospective students for the Diploma in Residential Surveying and Valuation the benefits of a new surveying career.

The event offered a great information-gathering and networking opportunity for prospective students, including qualified energy assessors, heating engineers, construction workers and those looking for a complete career change.

Joined by special guests from leading organisations within the industry, the SAVA team hosted a lively event with attendees coming from all over the UK to find out more about the new diploma and the opportunities it could generate. With a mix of formal presentations, Q&A and one-to-ones in our exhibition space, the event proved valuable for attendees and the overall positivity of everyone on the day was very encouraging.

SAVA

The SAVA team were at hand to answer any questions about the course, including details on the application process, entry routes, modules and new finance options. Managing Director, Austin Baggett, gave a brief background to SAVA and spoke of the current shortage of surveyors and valuers in the industry.

RICS

Fully supportive of the diploma, representatives from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) were in attendance promoting RICS standards and the benefits of RICS membership. RICS have now also included the Diploma in Residential Surveying and Valuation as a direct entry qualification, offering a direct pathway into RICS as an Associate member.

BlueBox partners

Independent surveyor and trainer for BlueBox partners, Alan Appleby, gave guests a look into the life of a surveyor, and types of survey available such as the Home Condition Survey and the HomeBuyer Report.

BlueBox partners are renowned for their technical expertise in the field and are currently working with SAVA to train the diploma.

Countrywide Surveying Services

Countrywide are a leading provider of residential valuations, surveys and panel management services in the UK. Head of Professional Services, Paul Cutbill, talked to attendees about the ageing workforce, explaining that the average age of a Countrywide Surveyor is 47 and the industry average is 58. The SAVA diploma will therefore offer the younger generation an opportunity to break into the industry without undertaking a three year degree.

evaluate surveyors

This was evaluate surveyors’ first appearance at a SAVA Open Day and it was great to see them there! evaluate surveyors is a new firm comprising a number of highly experienced surveying and valuing professionals. Their aim is to grow a network of surveyors and form a Valuation Panel of their own to provide national coverage. Managing Director, Paul Trott (FRICS), offered advice on how surveyors can market themselves to panels and described his ideal panel member as someone who is:

  • Known to them – transparent employment history
  • RICS member and Registered Valuer
  • Established local expertise
  • Current skills and market knowledge
  • Customer centric with a professional approach to all clients.

RPSA

The RPSA’s mission is to “protect, promote and support” their members and they do this by promoting the services of their members, holding CPD and training events, providing marketing tools and offering advice for business development.

Alan Milstein, Chairman of the Residential Property Surveyor’s Association (RPSA) explored the benefits of becoming a surveyor via the Diploma in Residential Surveying and Valuation, including pay per click PI insurance offered by the SAVA Scheme and how all diploma learners will receive one year’s free RPSA membership.

Alan also gave insight into the life of a successful independent surveyor and explained that his work is primarily sourced from referrals, website enquiries, property vendors and returning clients – emphasising the importance of networking.

If you were unable to make it to the event, don’t worry, we will shortly be releasing videos of all the day’s presentations for you to watch at your leisure. In the meantime, if you have any queries about enrolling on the diploma, do visit our website at www.surveyorqualifications.co.uk or give the SAVA team a call on 01908 442158.

Hello Ed,

We are looking into providing the insurance for the valuation, it isn't currently covered.
